CHEMISTRY ASSOCIATION 2010-2011

              Inauguration of Chemistry Association 2010-2011

The activities of the Chemistry Association for the accademic year 2010-2011 started with a formal inauguration on July 15th, 2010 by Dr. ROSAMMA ALEX, Deputy Director Rubber Technology Division , RRII, Kottayam. Meeting started with a prayer song by Asha Mariam John and Soosan Mary Abraham of IIIrd DC.   Nidhy Mary Rajan of IIIrd DC. welcomed the gathering. A very interesting and informative class on Rubber Technology was taken by the Cheif guest after the traditional Lighting  of lamp Ceremony. Renjitha of II DC. entertained the gathering with her solo. Soosan Mary Abraham of IIIrd DC proposed the vote of thanks. The function concluded with the National Anthem.

FRESHER'S DAY

On August 10, the first year students were welcomed by the third and second year students. An ice-breaking session   was held which was very interesting. Games were conducted to bring out their Talents and skills.

STATE   SEMINAR ON   BIO-INORGANIC CHEMISTRY

A three day state seminar on Bio- Inorganic Chemistry was organised by the Department of Chemistry, sponsored by U.G.C.on 22nd , 23rd and 24th of July 2010. The seminar was inaugurated by Prof. M.C. Dathan (Director, Sathish Dhawan Space Center, Sri Harikotta, Andhra Pradesh).

Bio-Inorganic Chemistry is a leading inter-disciplinary science at the interface of Chemistry, Biology, Physics and Medicine. The latest role for Bio-Inorganic Chemistry is in the linkages betrween inorganic elements and Genomic Information. The thrust areas of the seminar were Metal-Nucleic acid Interactions, Nucleic Acid Therapy, Role of Anions in Biological process, Biocomposites, Biomineralisation, Biocordination Chemistry.

Eminent Personalities from in and outside the state were the resource persons. Dr. Annu thomas, Dr. Abraham Joseph, Dr. kuruvilla oseph, Dr. Prakash Chandran, Dr. K. Mohanan and Dr. M.S.Latha were the resource persons. Teachers and students from various colleges around the state particiopated in the seminar.

Dr. P.P. Ravindran was the cheif guest for the valedictory meeting. He is the director of the Colege devlopment Council, M.G. University. Paricipants were awarded with the participation certificates.

ONAM CELEBRATIONS

Onam was celebrated with a lot of enthusiasm and vigour. The students of Chemistry Department participated in the "Flower  Carpet   Competition" conducted as part of the Onam Celebration of our College. We secured the first position in the consolation   prizes.

CANCER AWARENESS PROGRAM.

  A class on breast cancer awareness was organised by the Chemistry Association in the college Auditorium on 23rd October 2010. Dr. P.V. Ganghadharan, Medical Oncologist, Lakeshore Hospital spoke on the preventive methods of breast cancer, its early detection and treatment. It was followed by an interactive session with the students.

KERALA PIRAVI CELEBRATIONS

As part of the Kerala Piravi Celebrations in our College our students participated inthe Keralangana and Nostalgia Competitions. Chinnu Babu Neethu of 1st DC were selected to the second round of the competition.

INTER -CLASS COMPETITIONS  

IIIrd DC students conducted a news quiz competition for testing the general knowledge and increasing the reading habit of the students. The Quiz Masters were Indumol.A and Rakhi Mohan. The winners of the quiz competition were the IIIrd   D.C's followed by the Ist and II DC's.

As part of our Association activities a game was conducted by the II DC students for increasing the memory power. The winners were Ist DC and IInd DC students.

The first DC students hosted a game plus a quiz show for the IInd and IIrd DC students. The Winners of this competition were IIIrd DC students.

PARTICIPATION IN INTER-COLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS

Soosan Mary Abraham and Asha Mariam John of IIIrd DC participated in the Chemistry Quiz Competition hosted by Devamatha Colege, Kuravilangadu.

Shibitha Joy of IIIrd DC and Mamta of IInd DC paricipated in the Quiz Competition conducted by the Chemistry Department of Alphonsa College, Pala.

Nidhy Mary Rajan of IIIrd DC paricipated in the power point presentation Competition, ' SPARK 2010 ' conducted by the Chemistry Association of Assumption College, Changanacherry.

PARTICIPATION IN OTHER COMPETITIONS

Julia Susan Jogy of Ist DC. secured the consolation prize for essay competition conucted by Eco Club, and Ist  Prize for the news based quiz competition conducted by the English department.

PARTICIPATION IN NCC AND NSS

Indumol A of IIIrd DC is a cadet of the N.C.C. from our college. She has represented our College in various State and National Camps.

Shibitha Baby and Asha Mariam John of   IIIrd DC are the two volunteers of N.S.S. from our department. They have took part in a number of camps hosted by the N.S.S.

INTERACTION WITH A FOREIGNER

Ms. Isabella from Switzerland visited our college during her world tour programme. She shared with us information of various academic courses and the options for higher studies in switzerland. We gathered good informaton about the culture and people of her homeland.

  • Seminars organized by the Departments
  • A Value Education Class was conducted in February 2006.   Prof. Rabecca George, retired professor on B.C.M College was the resource person.
  • Seminar on Leadership Training and Behavior Modification was held on 28-2-06, with John Jacob, Rubber Research institute, Kottayam.
  • A One Day Seminar on Personality Development was held on 1-10-2005.   Mr. Cherian Varghese, S.B.T Kottayam was the resource person.
  • Seminar on Biotechnology and its Impact on Society was held on 26- 7- 2005. Dr. Jacob John, Retired professor of Kerala Agricultural University was the resource person.
  • Workshop on Personality Development and Career Opportunity was conducted on 16-10-04 with Mr. Varkey Mathew from Baselius College, Kottayam.
  • Seminar on Polymer Chemistry was held on 17-8-04 with Dr. Kuruvilla Joseph, S.B College, Changanachery.
  • Seminar on Synthetic Rubber was held on 27-9-2004. Prof. K.T Thomas, Deputy Director, RRII, Kottayam was the resource person.
  • Seminar on Solid Waste Management was held in June 2003 with Prof. E.V Ramaswamy, School of Environmental Studies, M.G University.
  • Seminar on Quantum Mechanics and Spectroscopy was organized in Oct 2002 with Prof. T.A Jose of St. Dominics College Kanjirappally and Prof. Thomas Mathew of Mar Thoma College, Thiruvalla.
  • A seminar on Wastewater Treatment and Environmental Pollution was organized in Nov 2001 with Dr. E.V Ramaswamy and Dr. V. B Manilal as resource persons.
  • A Personality Development Workshop was organized in Dec 2000 with Prof. P.C Varghese, from CMS College Kottayam.
  • A seminar on Rubber Processing was held in Aug 2000, with Dr. N. R Peethambaran as the resource person.
  • All Kerala Seminar on 'Group Theory and its Application' was held on the 24th of Oct. 2000. The resource person was Dr. A Salahuddin Kunju, Reader and Head of the Dept. of Chemistry, University College, Thiruvananthapuram.
  • National Seminar on Environmental Chemistry was organized in the first week of March 2002. The resource persons for the seminar were Prof. V N Rajasekharan Pillai, Dr. V.N Sivasankara Pillai, Dr. K. G Narayana Pillai, Dr. Satheesh K, Dr. M.G Kumaran, Dr. A.Pkuriakose , Dr. K. P Joy and Dr. Jose James.

INTERCOLLEGIATE COMPETITIONS

  • Students of Chemistry won 1st Price of Rs.5000/- as cash in the Onappattu competition counducted by Kerala Tourism Promotion Council. Inorder to encourage the activities of the 'Tourism club' they gave Rs.2500/- to it.
  • Our students won IInd position and a cash prize of Rs.1500/- in state level Onapattu competition organised by "Mattakkara Mannor Church"

ONE DAY SEMINAR

On 7th October we have counducted a seminar in honour of our retired teachers. The first session was an AIDS Awareness Seminar coundected by Cancer And Aids Shelter Society and sponsored by LIONESS CLUB INTERNATIONAL and Department Of Chemistry.
Second session was a seminar on "DNA Replication and its Applications" headed by Mr.Josin C Tharian, faculty member of St. Stephens College, Uzhavoor.

Co-Curricular Actiivites

Asha Jose and Sherin Punnose of II DC Chemistry won 1st Prize in Sr. Michael Debate Competition organised by B.C.M staff Association.

Keveena K of III DC and Bhavyalakshmi of II DC got 1st Prize and a cash prize of Rs.750/- in Intercollegiate Chemistry Quiz Competition held at Devamatha College, Kuravilangadu.

Keveena K of III DC   and Brity Baby of II DC got IVth place in State level Intercollegiate Quiz Competition held at S.H. College, Tevara and got Rs.250/- as cash prize.

Shilpa  of 1 DC got IIIrd prize in poetry writing in the literary competition held in our college.

Christy Maria Jose and Meera Thomas of II DC participated in "Virtuouso Event" counducted by R.I.T Engineering College, Kottayam. They also participaed in Kaiali T.V's X'Mas Celeberation programme   held at Mammen Mapillai Hall, Kottayam.

Sruthy S Sekhar and Praseeda Gopan of III D C participated in B.C.M Talenttime counducted as a part of "Student Education Adopted Program".

Britty Baby and Sherin Punnose completed  an add  on course in Journalism. They counducted many interviews   with many personalities and released a news letter "Zeitgist".   They released a documentary on   "Kumarakom-Environmental Hazards due to Tourism".

Agnes and Christy of II DC Chemistry paricipated in the leadership camp held   at S.B. College Counducted by CSM. They also took part in the Kerala Mela Competition at Assumption College.

A general Knowledge Quiz was counducted by III DC students on December 5th 2006 in which III DC students got the first prize.

SPORTS AND GAMES

  • Sherin Punnose of IInd DC was selected for M.G.University Table Tennis team.
  • Our students participated in the Annual Day Sports Competitions. Our students bagged   second prize in the "Tug of War" Competition.
  • Merin and Sruthy won second and third position respectively for "Book Balancing Competition".
